About County Roscommon

County Roscommon (Irish: Contae Ros Comáin) is a county located in central Ireland. Area: 2,547 square kilometres (983 sq mi). Roscommon is in the province of Connacht.

Roscommon is also the name of the county town. Athlone, on the River Shannon, which lies partly in Roscommon and partly in County Westmeath (in the neighbouring province of Leinster), is considered to be Ireland's most central town.

The Irish name of County Roscommon derived from ros, meaning a forested gentle height, and Comán, a fifth-century local Saint.

In contrast with other counties County Roscommon was just little affected by the Anglo-Norman invaders and its lands remained native property during the seventeenth century. This resulted in an isolated county, which maintained the old culture and manners.

The overall scenery of County Roscommon is undulating with scattered rocks and peat bogs. The most prominent features are the island-dotted lakes and the river-meadows created by the River Shannon and the Suck River. Lough Key Forest Park is highly popular destination as it offers attractions for both the active visitor as for the rest seeking visitor.

County Roscommon has some fine examples of ancient art, including a decorated stone, and a High Cross with highly detailed decorations.
